Bend Steel and See Bronze Pour with the Café
January 31, 2009
The towns of Los Alamos, Espanola, Pojoaque and Santa Fe are planning a half-day excursion to Santa Fe's Mesa Steel and the Shidoni Foundry in Tesuque on Saturday January 31. If you have not signed up, contact your adult leader by Wednesday January 28.
On the trip we will go to Santa Fe. At Mesa Steel you will see how steel is worked into many shapes and objects and will have a chance to shape some yourself. This tour will last about 45 minutes as you learn all about the business.
From there we will head to Tesuque and the Shidoni Foundry. A foundry is where compound metals like steel and bronze are made and then poured into different shapes. Shidoni has some beautiful grounds to walk and see some of the sculptures and objects they have created from bronze. They also do several pourings on Saturday afternoons. They do not announce the times until the Friday before, so we cannot know for sure until then, but they usually do 2-3 pours between 12 and 2 PM. Each group will stay for at least one and possibly two pourings. In between, we will have sandwiches and be able to walk the grounds to see some of the bronze artwork. The complete trip will take about 4 hours.
